The preliminary ceasefire between the United States and Iran has collapsed, prompting President Donald Trump to launch back-to-back military strikes against Iranian targets. President Trump declared at the NATO summit in Turkey that the 60-day truce signed in June was “over” following recent Iranian attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. revoked Iran’s oil export waiver, and Iran subsequently targeted three commercial shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military launched intense airstrikes hitting approximately 90 targets along Iran’s southern coastline, including air defenses and drone storage facilities. Tehran responded by firing ballistic missiles and drones at American military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
President Trump stated that the U.S. will “very probably” strike Iran hard again and threatened to target civilian infrastructure or seize Kharg Island if the hostilities continue. While Iranian officials have warned that they will match any further U.S. aggression with immediate force, Trump remains unpredictable, stating both that he wants to “finish the job” and that he is unsure if he still wants to pursue a peace deal.
