Despite extensive airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel, the military campaign has reached an impasse where achieving a decisive victory is proving difficult.
Upana Paudel reports on the enormous glacier collapse and landslide along the Nepal-China border which sent a massive wall of ice, mud, and water exploding down the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river systems. As of this weekend, the confirmed death toll has surged past 630 people, with nearly 3,000 others reported missing across Nepal and neighboring Tibet. Entire valleys and settlements have been completely wiped off the map. Thick, caked mud up to 100 meters wide has buried the first floors of buildings, destroyed local hydropower plants, and washed away crucial bridges and roadways. The forceand water volume of the flood also took out much of the warning equipment which would have provided a warning to the people as it rushed down the mountain valley.
Over 7,000 emergency personnel are trudging through relentless mud and debris to find survivors. High altitude search efforts are utilizing military and private helicopters to airlift stranded families. The Nepal Tourism Board notes that hundreds of foreign tourists—including citizens from the US, Australia, and the UK—are among the missing or dead. India has deployed multiple Indian Air Force flights carrying over 47 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) material, including medicines and food packets. Nepal’s President, Ram Chandra Paudel, has formally extended gratitude to India for their immediate solidarity.
Scientists have issued an urgent warning that upstream debris flows have formed unstable, temporary blockages. If these fragile debris dams burst, they could trigger a new, highly dangerous wave of inundation downstream. Relief centers are severely crowded.
